Eyes

Eyes

Eyes are your most exciting and expressive facial feature. A woman's eyes are her best beauty asset and they express moods and emotions. The simplest and the most dramatic way to enhance your appearance is to play up your eyes with make up.

The skin around the eyes is the first to show signs of ageing as they develop wrinkles faster. Too much strain on your eyes or sickness takes away some of the beauty and brightness of your eyes. However, a little care and using the right beauty products and techniques one could have beautiful eyes.

How to Apply The Lipstick Properly

How to apply the lipstick properly

To begin with, make sure that your lips are dry. Rid yourself of any traces of old lipstick. Apply a bit of face powder all around the outline of your lips to prevent the lipstick application from "bleeding" over the edges of the mouth. However, do not apply powder liberally all over lips.

The best way to apply the lipstick is to use a lip- brush. As you work, prop your elbows on a firm surface to give you steady hand, and keep your lips slightly apart.

Load the brush with plenty of lipstick. Start with upper lip, moving from the centre to the edges of the mouth or the reverse way. Repeat the process in the lower lip, then fill the rest. Make sure that lipstick is evenly applied. If you have drooping corners, do not outline them up to the corner.

After you have finished applying lipstick, keep your lips slightly apart for a couple of minutes. This gives it time to set. Blot your lips with tissue and apply a second coat. This will help it to last long last. If you are fond of shiny lips, apply lip gloss.

Choosing a Lipstick

Choosing a Lipstick

It is best to use a lipstick manufactured by a reputed company. Never go in for cheaper brands. The skin of the lips are very sensitive and may be allergic to substances contained in cheap brands.

Choosing the correct shade is also important. Skin reactions to lipstick colours varies, so you must try on the lipstick before you buy it. Dab a little on the inside of your wrist to check the colour.

The occasion and dress style are the other important factors. If you wear a casual cloth, lipstick of the natural colors is more suitable while deeper colors such as dark reds would be preferable for a party or formal events.

Try different shades: It is a good to have shades of pink, orange, magenta and brown in your lipstick collections, so that they will go with most of your clothes. It is better that your lipstick and clothes are of the same basic colour.

Lips

Lips

Lips are the most prominent among facial features. A pair of naturally beautiful lips are the symbols of sexuality and sensuality.

Everyone wants full, juicy, beautiful lips and some of us not blessed with naturally beautiful lips. But don't despair! Learn the tricks of the trade to help your lips more attractive.

Lip Cosmetics:

A soft glimmer of lip colour harmonizes your whole beautiful look. They add the final touch to facial make up. Lip colour is one of the essentials you should always carry with you. They are available in sticks, tubes, pencils, as liquids and in pots.

Lipstick

Lip sticks come in a variety of colours. The colour chosen should harmonise not only with the rest of the make up but also with your attire and skin colour. Soft colours are suited for pale skins and vibrant shades are suited for darker skins. To keep the colour stay longer, the lips must be dry and clean while applying. It is best applied with a brush. Use the colour according to the skin and age. Lipstick containing more benzene may cause darkness of the lips.

Lip Liner

A lip lining pencil is used to outline the lips. With the lip liner, you can make the lip appear thinner or fuller or you can draw an uplifted corner if your lips droop. Thus it gives the lips a perfect shape.

Lip Care

  • You can mix one-tablespoon cranberry sauce juice with two tablespoons Vaseline for a delicious home made lip balm.

  • Apply the juice of lemon skin, to avoid the black colour of lips.

  • Massage your lips with coriander leaf juice for soft and rosy lips.

Eye Cosmetics & Make Up

Eye Cosmetics & Care

Cleanliness and hygiene should be followed when using eye cosmetics otherwise it can lead to some infections of the eyes. It is not good to borrow or lend any eye make up and it is best to always keep your hands clean while using eye make up.

Eye Shadows

Eye shadows leave a shiny or opaque finish depending on the time of make up and shape of eyes. To achieve the perfect daytime look with eye shadow, you need to follow some basic guidelines. The basic tones you need are
(a) a pale highlighter shade for your brow bone area.
(b) a basic shade for your eyelids.
The shades you choose can be deep-toned or pale, neutral or bright, but they should be applied so that they are not too strong. Blending is important while applying eye shadow. The colour used should be appropriate to the colour of the skin and match the colour of the dress. When you use more than one shade they should be so well blended that you can't tell where one ends and the next one begins.

Forms of shadows

Eye Shadows come in a variety of forms like pressed powders, pencils, sticks, gels or creams. Pressed powders are the most popular form of shadows. They are available in pearly and matt textures. You can get a better effect, if you apply them with a wet brush. The cream shadows are oil or wax based. It is best suited for dry lids and should be avoided on greasy eye lids. Pencils have a high colour and filling ability. Gels are suited for oily skins.

Brushes for application

A straight - bristled brush for each colour and a round bristled brush for blending.

Application

When you apply eye shadow, always start with the highlighter shade. Brush it just under the outer end of each eyebrow and quickly blend the colour inward toward the inner end of the eyebrow, above the inner corner of the eye. After that apply the eyelid shadow by beginning in the centre of each lid, just above the pupil of your eye. With a blending brush, make a quick back and forth motion. Finish the make up by blending upward to meet the highlighter shade.

Eye liner

Eye liners are the most extensively used form of eye make up. Eye liner is used to make the eyes more prominent and create an illusion of thicker lashes. Eye lining is done with a back or brown eye liner on the top lid of each eye and sometimes under the lower lashes. The line should be smooth instead of a harsh line.

Forms of liners

Eye liner comes in liquids or pencil form. Care should be taken when using liquid eye liner. It should not go into the eyes. Liquid liners can be either water based or alcohol based. Alcohol based liners are water proof.

Application

To apply liquid eye liner, draw the brush out of the bottle or tube and stroke it against the mouth of the tube to remove excess liquid and taper the brush to a fine point. Using the very tip of the brush, stroke the eyeliner evenly across the lid as close to the base of the lashes as possible, beginning with the inner corner of the eye and continuing to the outer corner of the eyelid. Apply the line in several short brush strokes.

Indians have our own indigenous type of eye make up -kajal. Home made Kajals does not contain any chemicals.

Eye defining pencil

Eye defining pencil adds definition and a hint of colour to the bottom of each eye. It is available in variety of colours. The pencil should have a fine point and a medium to soft lead so it glides on easily under the lower eyelashes.

To apply eye defining pencil, lightly stroke a single, fine line under the lower lashes starting at the outer corner of the eye. The line must be close to the base. Run the pencil smoothly under the lashes along each lower eyelid to the inner corner of the eye. Then use an angles brush or a cotton swab to soften and blend the line. Eye defining should be never be a hard, thick line.

Eye brow Pencil

An eyebrow pencil emphasizes the eye brows, improves their shapes and makes them look thick. The colour of the eyebrow pencil should never be darker than that of your brows or hair colour.

To apply eyebrow pencil, brush your eyebrows with a eyebrow brush to remove excess foundation or face powder. Then with outward brush strokes, smooth the hairs in the direction in which they grow. To shape your brows properly, begin by using short, light strokes of the pencil to outline the top of each eyebrow up to its arch. Use featherlike strokes to extend each brow to the end. Fill in any sparse areas by using these same strokes. Then brush your brows with an eyebrow brush to smooth them and blend in the pencil strokes.

Mascara

Mascara thickens the eye lashes and increase attractiveness of the eyes and emphasize them. It gives the eye make up the finishing touch. Brush the lashes, apart from application. Light coats are better than thick ones.

Forms of Mascara

There are 3 different forms of Mascara - water based, water proof and the mixed variety. Mixed variety is the the most useful one. Water based mascaras can be applied quickly and removed easily. So they are gentle to the lashes and eyes. But they won't stay for a long time, as the mascara smudges easily when it comes into contact with water, tears and perspiration.
Water proof variety stay for a long time and is water proof and smudge proof. They are a good investment as they are resistant to contamination and can be used even years after they have been manufactured. But it takes a long time to dry and is difficult to remove the liner. The mixed variety is a combination of water based and water proof mascaras. These dry quickly and is easy to remove.

Application

Apply mascara by looking straight into the mirror, with your chin lifted slightly so you can see your lashes clearly. Gently twist the spiral brush as you withdraw it from the masara bottle. Stroke your upper lashes evenly from their base to the tips, curling them upward with the brush as you apply the mascara. Apply mascara to the lower lashes with downward strokes, wiggling the brush back and forth a bit to separate the lashes. After you have applied the mascara to both eyes, you can repeat the application to add more fullness to your eyelashes.

Under eye concealers

They are intended to hide blemishes and dark circles under the eyes. Application of make up above them, does not remove them.

Foundation

Foundation

Foundation should be considered as a skin improver. Foundation should match your skin tone. To choose a colour apply little on your cheek or inside of your wrist. Be careful to blend around nose and chin and fade away under the chin. Heavy foundation is old fashioned and ageing. Foundation should never appear like a mask. The shade chosen should be as close to your natural skin tone, so that there is no sudden change of colours between Chin and neck.

Different types of foundation

Foundations are available in various forms liquids, gels, creams, solid creams, in sticks (pen stick), cakes (pancakes). This can be chosen depending on how much clarity or cover you prefer.

  • Emulsions
These are packaged in tubes and are formulated for a variety of skin types- for dry skins, oily skins and normal skins. This gives less sheen than cream or liquid foundations, but cover blemishes very well.
  • Creams
These are packed in jars. As they contain a high proportion of oils, they are particularly suitable for dry skins. These also provide a heavy cover, but gives a glossy finish.

  • Liquids
These are packaged in bottles and can be formulated for all skin types. They give a light sheen cover but are too light to cover any blemishes and scars.

  • Gels
These are packaged in squeeze tubes. They give a light, natural look and are the variety you should use if you have a blemish free normal skin.

  • Cakes or sticks
These are the solid forms of foundation. Since they have a drying effect, use them on an oily skin. They hide blemishes and scars. Solid forms are popular for photographic and stage work but are too heavy for every day use.

  • Powders
The original full coverage face-powders have now given way to transparent powders; these transparent powders control shine and provide oil - blotting. They are used after foundations to give a matt finish. Cake or compact powders are more heavily formulated; as they contain a certain amount of foundation. These are not the best choice for the initial powdering over foundation because they may rub the foundation off and also cause an unattractive colour build-up. They are best used for touching up during the way, as they help to reinforce coverage.

Choice of a foundation

Two aspects should be taken into account before choosing a foundation - the form of the foundation and its colour. Some forms are more suited to certain skin types than others. Age and the basic condition of your skin also influence the choice of the foundation.

  • Choice based on the skin type
An oil based foundation is most suited for dry skin as this gives additional moisture. An oil -free, water based foundation (Cake or stick form) is most suited for oily skin. Any form of foundation is suited for the normal skin type especially, Emulsions and liquid foundations which can be used for any skin type

  • Choice based on age and condition of skin
For young and fine skin, a thin foundation (light sheer liquids) is most suited. For a skin with uneven colour and tone, blemishes etc a heavy foundation (cream of stick) is suitable, to cover the poor condition of the skin. For older skin, 2 coats of light liquid foundation is suitable- a heavier foundation may emphasize the lines and skin creases.

  • Choice based on Colour
A make up base or foundation must match the natural skin tone of the person as much as possible. This colour matching is best done in day - light and not in artificial light. A fair skin can use Beige, brownish gold or ochre and darker skin can use pinkish beige, peach or pinkish ochre. If there are more than one colour tone in your face, then match the foundation to the middle tone. Mixing two colours -one which matches your skin and the other which complements your natural colouring could have very good effect.

Powder

A shade close to your skin colour should be used. Powder is not really meant to add colour, but it helps to add a smooth finish. Apply with a bushy brush or with cotton and dust off excess powder.

Blusher or Rouge

After facial make up, the next thing that comes on the face is the blusher. Blusher can be in powder form as well as cream form. The colours should not be very much darker than your skin tone. Smile widely with your lips closed. Your cheek naturally raise; apply rouge on the raised area and fade out gradually towards the hairline. Never apply rouge too close to the nose and too low on the cheeks.

Types of Hair

It is essential to identify the texture of your hair whether dry, oily or balanced for a good hair care program. Read on to identify your hair type.

Dry Hair

Dry hair is due to inactive oil glands. It is also caused by other factors like over exposure to the sun, using harsh shampoo and chemical treatment. Accumulated oil, block the pores not allowing the oil to flow on to the surface. This is another reason for dry hair. Dry hair would need plenty of nourishment.

Massage well with a warm herbal oil at least twice a week. Follow a diet rich in zinc. Use a mild shampoo and avoid harsh ones since the chemicals in them can strip hair of its outer protein layer, further drying the scalp. Do not use electric curlers and hair dryers.

Oily Hair

This is usually accompanied with oily skin. This is due to the over secretion of oil. Hence the scalp and hair gets too oily. Oily hair is easily recognizable. It looks greasy even after shampooing and and attracts more dirt.

The oily hair needs to be washed every third or fourth day or even more frequently depending on individual comfort and rinsed out with lemon. Use oils and shampoos rich in neem and henna. A head massage with a herbal oil helps maintain the pH level of the scalp. Avoid oily foods and binge on green leafy vegetables and fruits.

To figure out your hair type:
Dab a tissue on your scalp the second day after wash. If it has an oil blot, you have normal hair. If the tissue shows nothing, it is dry. If strands stick to each other then it is greasy hair .

Balanced or Normal Hair

This is the most ideal hair. It is shining, well balanced and does not dry out. To maintain this ideal condition a well balanced diet and proper care is essential.

Shampooing and Conditioning

Most people want their hair silky and shiny. No matter what the type of hair they have, be it straight, curly, long, short, oily, dry, thin or thick all want their hair to look good and manageable.

Shampooing

To shampoo is to wash, cleanse or remove all dirt or other impurities from the scalp and hair by the process of shampooing. The selection of the shampoo should depend upon the hair type.

Egg shampoo is good for dry hair but avoid products which contain alcohol as they will dry out the hair even further. Look for shampoos that contain oils like coconut. Moisturizing type shampoos tend to coat the hair and trap the moisture inside the hair shaft.

For oily hair use some mild shampoo. Care should be taken while using shampoo. Do not scrub or over massage. It is better to rinse thoroughly with Luke warm water. If the hair is too oily, add lemon juice in Luke warm water and rinse.

The best shampoo's to use for this type of hair is clarifying shampoos. Look for shampoos that contain panthenol. Volumizing shampoos are mild in nature because they are formulated for everyday use, but contain additives for bounce and body.

Shampooing can be done as often (ideally every alternate day) as required to keep the hair clean and healthy, as long as you condition regularly. Switch shampoos once a month to avoid hair buildup.

Method of Shampooing

Prepare the hair for shampooing. Before wetting your hair for shampooing, comb through with a wide toothed comb to prevent tangles. Mix and adjust the water flow. Mix the water to a comfortable temperature.

Wet the hair and scalp thoroughly. Apply the shampoo to the hair by first pouring it into your hand and never directly. Apply with the hands and fingers, massage firmly in rotating and circular movements. Massage the whole head. Rinse the hair and scalp thoroughly and carefully. Apply more shampoo and massage for the second time if needed, finally rinse all shampoo from the hair and scalp with clean water. Finally check the hair lines and make sure that the dirt and shampoo has been removed from hair and scalp. Dry the hair gently. Don't rub just blot the wet hair with a towel and then smooth the towel along the length of your hair. Avoid blow drying as far as possible. If you shampoo regularly there is no need to lather twice.

Conditioning

A conditioner is to hair what a moisturiser is to the skin and it used after shampooing. All types of hair have to be conditioned to keep it shiny and flexible. Conditioning is specially useful for dry hair. It adds to the natural oil supply and gives dry hair, shine as well as bounce and strength. For oily hair, use conditioner only on the ends of your hair .

Method of Conditioning

  1. After shampooing gently squeeze the excess water.

  2. Comb the hair with the fingers or with wide toothed comb from the roots to the ends gently. Remove tangles.

  3. Apply little conditioner and rub the conditioner through the hair with the fingers. Never rub on the scalp.

  4. Keep it on the hair for 5 minutes

  5. Now gently massage the hair to loosen the conditioner.

  6. Rinse the hair and remove all traces of conditioner. Now dry the hair.

Hair Problems & Remedies

Dandruff

Everyone's had itchy scalp or dandruff at some time or another. Dandruff is the presence of small white flakes usually appearing on the scalp and the hair. It is known by medical term "pityriasis" which is most commonly found in people between the ages of 12 and 80. The direct cause of dandruff is the excessive shedding of outermost cells. The indirect causes are

  1. Poor blood circulation

  2. Improper diet

  3. Un-cleanliness

  4. Use of strong shampoo

  5. Insufficient rinsing of hair after shampooing

Types of Dandruff
  1. Dry type

  2. Greasy or waxy type

Cause for dry dandruff

  1. Poor blood circulation

  2. Lack of nerve stimulation

  3. Emotional disturbance

  4. Glandular disturbance

  5. Not producing sufficient oil

Treatment of dry dandruff

  • Scalp treatment (ozone treatment)

  • Herbal shampoo

  • Hot oil therapy

  • Use of antiseptic lotion

  • Henna treatment

Waxy type dandruff is mixed with sebum which makes the scalp itchy. If the scales are torn off, bleeding or oozing may occur.

Treatment

The best thing to do is to keep the scalp clean, and do oil massage twice in a week.

Herbal Treatment

  • Massage scalp with essential oils like rosemary, cedar, lemon and eucalyptus to reduce flaking itchiness of the scalp.

  • 'Methi' seeds are also helpful in fighting dandruff. Soak them overnight, grind the next morning, mix in the juice of neem leaves and apply on the scalp .

  • In half cup of olive oil, put a small amount of camphor warm it lightly and apply to the scalp parting the hair straight and give a circular massage for the entire scalp.

  • Avoid fatty foods and red meat.

Causes of Graying hair

The colour of the hair depends on the presence of pigment granules in the cortex of the hair. With age there is a gradual dilution of pigment in the hair, so that in different hairs the full range of colours from normal to white can be found.

Grey hair can some times appear earlier. Rapid graying of hair may occur after severe emotional stress. In certain internal diseases hair might gray early. This is especially true of diseases of the thyroid gland and certain types of anemia's. Localised patches of gray hair can appear in certain areas. Perming, colouring and bleaching work to promote graying.

What can be done

The usual and the most effective way of dealing with graying of hair is dyeing it. There are several types of dyes available. The oxidative dyes are the most versatile and the most frequently used. But dyeing has its drawbacks- once you start dyeing it is seen to increase gray hairs. Henna is also used because apart from its safety, it is a superb conditioner. Having calcium pantothenate in the dose of 200 mg daily is a good treatment.

Split Ends

Causes:-The most common causes of spilt ends are; use of heated appliances (Hair dryers) and chemical processing (like using dies), using the wrong type of brush and comb and general neglect.

Cure:- Since hair grows 1.25 cm. a month, a trim of 6.3 cm. every five weeks should suffice. Switching to a wide -toothed, non-metal comb or brush with a padded base and widely spaced bristles to prevent getting trapped at the base of the brush. Avoiding the hottest temperature setting on your hair dryer. Using a conditioning treatment on the ends of hair.

Dull Hair

Cause:- In healty hair, the cuticle lies flat and reflects the light. Harsh chemicals and environment assaults can cause healthy hair to become rough and damaged, spoiling the reflective surface. The cause of dull hair is a build-up left by styling products or the conditioning agent that two-in-one products contain. Some times an illness, like flue releases toxins from the body through the sebaceous glands in the scalp, coating the hair, eventually leading to listless hair.

Cure:- The most important rule is to keep your hair clean. It is better to follow a well- balanced diet -protein and iron are essential for shiny hair, as is vitamin C.

Dry Hair

Cause :The main reason for dry hair is the over use of heated appliances, perming, colouring, bleaching, incorrect use of products and environmental damage.

Cure: Switch to a shampoo and a rinse-out conditioner for dry hair. Don't apply conditioner to the roots, it will leave hair heavy and limp. At least once or twice a week, use a deep conditioning treatment to re-moisturise. Alternatively, you can rub hair oil between your palm and then massage it into dry areas. Avoid rollers and tight elastic bands on the brittle hair as they may cause it to break.

Hair Loss

It is quite natural to lose about fifty to hundred a day. More than this amount of hair loss could result from any one of a number of factors and may be cause for concern.

Cause: Daily repetition of certain hairstyles

, like hair tightly pulled back, braided or wrapped around rollers can pull out individual hairs. Such pulling can damage and destroy follicles completely and the hair will not grow back.Emotional stress may bring on alppecia areata, a disorder that results in bald patches on the scalp and may be associated with changes in the immune system. Emotional stress can also cause hair to fall from parts of the scalp. Body stress is also known to cause excessive hair loss. Hair loss can result from pregnancy or begin when a woman stop taking birth control pills.

Cure: It is better to see a trichologist if handfuls of hair fall out after shampooing. For mild hair loss, use products that tone and invigorate the scalp and stimulate the growth. Scalping massage is good, which aside from being relaxing and reducing stress levels, loosens and stimulates the scalp and promotes healthy hair growth.

Most hair loss is temporary, but when the follicles are destroyed by serious scalp burns, excessive exposure to x-rays, or vital infection, hair loss can be permanent.

Dry Scalp

Cause: It may or may not be a cause of dandruff

Cure: Dry scalp can be controlled by using a very gentle shampoo and intensive conditioner regularly.

Hair Care Tips

  • Brush your hair regularly before going to bed each night.

  • Wash your hair with a mild shampoo. Use very little but enough to cover hair completely with lather. Use a conditioner to keep hair manageable.

  • Avoid brushing wet hair. This will cause the hair to stretch and finally break. Finger-dry, or use a wide-toothed comb instead of a brush to gently remove the knots.

  • Restrict blow-drying your hair. The process of blow-drying is harsh on hair as it robs it of moisture.

  • Avoid dyes. Use mehandi (henna) instead as a conditioner and colouring agent.

  • Take a calcium supplement or drink two glasses of milk a day.

  • Always hold hair dryer away from your hair. Direct air from the hair dryer down hair shaft and not directly into the roots and keep it moving.

  • After a perm, never brush your hair. Instead comb hair gently.

  • Trim your hair once in 7 weeks to avoid split ends.

  • Avoid pulling back your hair tightly.

  • Never use a rubber band on your hair as it can pull and damage hair considerably.

  • Never go out in the sun without having your head covered.

  • Stimulate circulation by massaging your head with oil to which some vitamin E has been added. This will make hair soft and silky.

  • Never wash your hair with very hot or very cold water.

  • Learn to relax. Hair loss can happen because of stress. Eat foods that are rich in vitamin B, C and E.

  • Add iron and minerals in the natural form in your diet.

  • If your hair is oily, cut down on fried food and fat. Drink plenty of water.

The way you wear your hair can affect the appearance of your features. Your personal style will always be a factor in the hairstyles you choose. The right hairstyle makes the most of your best qualities.

Long styles work with any hair type - straight, wavy, or curly - but looks best if locks are medium-textured or thick. Skip the lengthy look if you have fine hair (it tends to go straggly) or a long, narrow face.

Short hairdos look great with all face shapes. It is best for fine or medium hair that's straight to slightly wavy. If you have curly hair, a lot of it, opt for a longer style - a short cut could look puffy.

Fringes: The length of your fringes influence the appearance of your forehead. Short fringes make the distance between eyebrows and hairline look longer than it is. Long ones make your forehead look shorter and some times wider. Fringes that are long at the temples and curve to a shorter length across your forehead will highlight your eyes and make cheekbones broader.

Partings:
Worn straight down the center add width to your brow. Slightly off-center parts and side parts make your forehead seem narrower. Low side parts on your head broaden your forehead.

Hair pulled back:
This style highlights your jaw line, elongates and thins your neck. Drawing your hair over the top of your ears will make your ears look smaller and closer to your head.

Fullness:
Fullness at the crown tends to make your face look longer. It adds width to your cheeks and brow. Fullness at your jaw line or below will broaden your lower face. Full hair brushed up and away from your face at your temples gives a lift from your face at your temples gives a lift to your cheekbones and makes your eyes look wider.

Ringlets:
Wisps of wavy or curly hair that fall from a pulled -up hairstyle soften the outer edge of your face and add length to your neck. Tendrils can soften the severity of a hair style pulled back from your face.

To Create Curls

Wash hair and allow to air-dry until just damp. Starting at your forehead, wrap a two-inch section of hair around your second and third fingers, then slide fingers out and secure loop to scalp with a bobby pin. Proceed in this manner all over head. Either sleep with pin curls in place or leave them on until hair is completely dry. Then undo and tousle tresses with fingers.

For a curl free mane

Comb a styling lotion through damp hair and gather it into a tight, low ponytail at the nape. Twist tail loosely and wrap it around itself, securing ends to scalp with hair pins. Leave in until hair is no longer wet. Undo to reveal twist-free mane. (If your hair is short, follow the above steps, but slick hair back with a wide headband and skip the twist).

Skin Disorders

The skin is subject to various problems - blemishes, infections and growth due to internal or external causes. It occurs equally among men and women.

Some of the skin disorders are

Lesion - Change in tissue formation.

Papule - A firm raised lesion

Pustule - Similar to papule but contains puss.

Seborrhea - Excessive secretion of disturbed quantity of sebum is collected upon the skin in the form of oily coating. This is known as seborrhea. Some times a burning sensation is felt

White heads - These are caused by pores getting clogged with hardened oil. Here the pores are not open. They therefore show up as tiny white pearly lumps beneath the surface of the skin. They usually form on oily skin.

Black heads - In this case the pores are open and clogged sebum is exposed to the air. Oxidation takes place turning it black in colour.

Acne - This is one of the most common skin disorders which primarily affects the adolescents as it can be caused by increase of sex hormones which takes place during puberty. This imbalance of sex hormones causes the sebaceous glands to secrete more sebum (Sebum is a semi-fluid oily substance which lubricates the skin). The pores of the skin enlarge and get blocked with hardened sebum. This result in black heads and pimples. Some of these develop into pustule which rupture and spread infection. Both men and women are affected by acne, but young men are more likely to have more severe, longer lasting forms of acne.

Acne should never be neglected as it causes extensive scarring. Clinical and professional treatment is necessary.
